Painting has been a part of me just about all of my life. Supplies were readily accessible from my dad's sign shop right next door to our home. When I had my own home years later, it was really exciting to discover decorative painting. There just was no end to the possibilities of things to paint and what to put on them!
Teaching classes came next for me in 1983, and progressed to owning retail shops thereafter.
In 1990 I submitted a painted board and passed requirements entitling me to be known as a "Certified Decorative Artist." If you would like to know more about this, go to the link page and select Society of Decorative Painters. Since that time, I have continued to teach classes locally and at many national conferences. Many of my designs have been published in the Artist's Journal, PaintWorks, and Decorative Painter. Thanks to good friends made in decorative painting, I have also taught a class in Australia.
A member of the Society of Decorative Painters since 1983, I have always been active in local chapters, including serving as president of Magic Palette's of Northern California, and charter president of Decorative Brushes of Northern California.
The Studio of Decorative Arts was established in 1998 with the help of long time friend Jeanie Serveau. Classes are offered for beginning to advanced students. Every year finds me sitting in classes taught by great teachers such as JoSonja Jansen, Helan Barrick, and Heidi England. It is always important to keep up with current techniques and to learn as much as one can; our painting style is certainly ever changing.
Besides all the wonderful friends made through painting, it is so gratifying to guide those who believe they have "no talent" to finish a project that pleases them. It is really true that people can be taught to paint, just as they can be taught to play a guitar, or knit!
In 2003 my husband Dennis retired from teaching high school English, and now is busy being a folk artist himself; you'll find him here as well.
Painting is a wondrous place where you can enjoy creativity and find life long friends.
